The chaos of another fashion week is over…you made it! You’re exhausted, drained and need a restorative pick-me-up.
Here at What? Magazine we don’t just like to look to the obvious sources for self care all the time. Sometimes a person needs more.
In fact sometimes a person needs something that centuries ago, the Three Wise Men cottoned onto and brought as a gift to the infant Jesus; Frankincense. It wasn’t because they couldn’t think of a better gift, or didn’t have anything else to give; Frankincense was specifically chosen as a gift because it symbolised spiritual presence and rebirth.
After feeling broken down from a particularly hectic week, I was told by a friend to head to Neal’s Yard, the home of natural remedies, pick myself up some Frankincense oil and go home and burn it. So, I did…and holy smoke!
The pungent yet pleasing aroma resonates somewhere deep within and actually helps to lower the heart rate inducing an atmosphere of calm, quiet and mental peace. It switched my brain off from incessantly buzzing around and I found myself still, and able to breathe long deep refreshing breaths…instead of having palpitations and what frequently feels like fashion-stress induced mini heart attacks!
I slept like never before and awoke unbelievably revitalised and clear-headed. I shared the experience with Nora Nona, my Beauty Editor, who also had a mysterious and powerfully healing night’s sleep after burning the oil.
Frankincense as we know it is a resin from the sap from the Boswellia tree which hardens on contact with the air. Its healing properties are many on both a spiritual and physical level; being a very powerful grounding oil, it’s amazing for ridding one of emotional distress and for spring cleaning a disorganised, turbulent mind. I discovered that topically it’s incredibly effective also!
Neal’s Yard’s Frankincense range harnesses the rejuvenating, firming and anti-aging qualities of the plant. It also offers a sumptuous feeding frenzy for the skin in a blend of Baobab to regenerate and moisturise, Marine Algae to encourage the production of hyaluronic acid which supports collagen production and plumps the skin, and Tri-Peptides to reduce wrinkles and firm the skin tone.
So whilst burning the oil or resin is beneficial for stimulating one’s spirit…the products are wonderful for stimulating one’s skin…a double whammy of goodness for inside and out!
As an essence Frankincense has been a revelation to me. After a stressful, worrisome day, I now know that tapping into the properties of Frankincense each day will help me unwind, decompress and tune out to all the irrelevant worries the materialistic world sometimes tricks us into believing are important; I will be transported to a place of stillness of simply being. Frankincense is like a trap door to another level of consciousness…one where there is clarity and knowing…and I for one intend to drift through that door.
