The intense, beautiful and eerie single, ‘Flavour’ from Tori Amos’ newest album ‘Gold Dust’, is a journey through New-York city’s urban landscape. WHAT? Magazine was behind the scenes as part of the creative team and is happy to report that although the video may be set in New York City, it was a thoroughly trans-Atlantic affair.

Ms. Amos effortlessly worked her edgy and chic looks from the top of her flame-haired head, to the exquisite shoes hugging her toes and to her famous finger tips (might we add) where you will find none other than London’s own Nail Rock making their statement.

These boldly designed nail-wraps are not for the faint-hearted; with graphic designs, bright colours and easy application, they were perfect for adding a finishing touch for filming.

Sitting in a downtown coffee shop, Tori wore Nail Rock’s Python print, a brilliant snakeskin effect that had every woman on set oohing and ahhing.

The closing scene of the video sees Tori on the West Side with a group of young club kids; an exchange between them reveals Nail Rock’s glorious bright red nails with metallic gold moons glinting at the camera.

We at WHAT? Magazine pride ourselves on bringing you the latest and greatest that’s out there, and now you too can re-create some of these nailtastic trends.

Visit www.nailrock.com for the full range, and get creative with those digits.

Also available at : Asos, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and River Island.

This season, beauty trends go through the spectrum of possibilities, starting at high impact with the sci-fi goddesses that made their way down Prada’s Fall runway to the bare faces of Valentino’s statuesque models. Whether it’s party ready glam you’re after, or demur pretty you wish to achieve, we’ve got the expert beauty how to tips to help create your perfect fall beauty look.

This look is all about fresh-faced innocence.

STEP 1

A good tip is, to achieve a glowing result is whilst your moisturizer is still damp on the skin, massage your foundation in to create a natural, dewy look; a personal favorite is DiorSkin Nude Foundation

STEP 2

Groom your eyebrows with Lancôme’s Hypnose Brow Shaper, and then reach for the trusty Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers to open up those peepers. Keep mascara to 1 coat, which is all you’ll need with Clinique’s High Volume Extreme Impact Mascara

STEP 3

Here comes the romantic part: using Shiseido’s Camellia Compact, sweep a brush through and tap off the excess. Smile at yourself and sweep the color from those juicy apples away to the center of your cheekbone — no zebra stripes here please, and don’t apply too close to the center of the face or you’ll look sunburned. Build the color and intensity with light layers until you’re suitably flushed.

STEP 4

The finishing touch comes with Rouge Dior Nude Lip Colour in Trompe L’Oeil. If you need a dab of moisture pat a tiny amount of MAC’s CreamSheen Gloss in either Dynasty at Dusk or Imperial Light for a peachier tone.

Et Voila…as if butter wouldn’t melt.

Gorgeous, velvety glamorous eyes, this look takes a little patience, but is clearly worth it.

STEP 1

Grab a Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint in Big Blue, and give your eyelids a scribble from your lashline up to your crease, lightly along the browbone towards your nose, and also along your lower lashline; use your middle-finger to even the color out and smudge it.

STEP 2

Do the same again, from the lashline up, with emphasis in the crease, and underneath, with the darker shade Massive Midnight. The trick to a blended smokey eye is to work the colors backwards, from lightest to darkest.

STEP 3

Take Nars’ Matte Eyeshadow in Royal, and with a mid-sized, soft eyeshadow brush push this deep blue into the eyelid going from the outside corner to roughly 1/3 of the way, and underneath the eye. If you go half way across the eyelid, it will end up looking dated, so keep it current and use a little product as a time.

STEP 4

Use Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wearing Gel Eyeliner in Caviar Ink, along the top lashline and a little underneath just at the corner of the eye. Follow with the dramatic DiorShow Mascara in Rich Black, and finish with a touch of MAC’s Pure Zen on the lips.

*Bonus Step*

2 coats of Estee Lauder’s Nail Colour by Tom Pecheux in Blue Blood polishes off this look perfectly.

Irresistibly alluring, these lips are a classic statement.

STEP 1

It’s super important to pamper that pout before adding color, so give them a scrub using Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, and then follow with Korres Lip butter for seriously hydration.

STEP 2

Bright skin is of the essence and Estee Lauder’s Perfectionist Serum will help you get there; then eliminate shadows and give yourself a glow with Shiseido’s Radiant Lifting Foundation.

STEP 3

Tame those unruly brows with Kevyn Aucoin’s The Precision Brow Pencil. For those of you lucky to have even, obedient eyebrows, Lancôme’s new Le Regard Pro Eyes and Brow Kit is brilliantly multi-functional. Neutral eyeshadows with a standard brown eyebrow powder means you can get 2 results with one little palette — perfect for the handbag.

STEP 4

One of my favorite mascara’s Maybelline’s Full & Soft will leave your lashes, defined, soft and flirty, so you can focus on your lips.

STEP 5

Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge is a true red, whilst Estee Lauder offers Pure Colour Vivid Shine in Violet Electra an intensely deep fuscia, and Fireball, a fabulously raging orange. Shu Uemura’s small Concealer Brush no.10 makes for a great lip brush to help spread color evenly and get a smooth finish.

This look is cool, edgy, and not for the faint-heared.

STEP 1

Definitely prepare under the eye with Even Better Eyes, Clinique’s Dark Circle Corrector

STEP 2

Skin should be minimally made up and Un-Cover Up by RMS is the only way to go, followed by a light dusting of Burberry’s Sheer Luminous Pressed Powder

STEP 3

Use Elizabeth Arden’s Eye Fix Primer anywhere you will be applying color, to ensure it stays put. MAC’s Paint Pot in Blackground is good for this look, and you will need a couple of brushes to execute this cleanly.

STEP 4

I advise sketching the shape of this first before filling in, and have Q-Tips at the ready in case of any mishaps. Then, take Prescriptives Jet eyeliner pencil to line the upper and lower lashlines, and inside the lower eyelash line. No mascara for this as you don’t want it to look too polished.

STEP 5

A little Laura Mercier Matt Bronzing Powder will lift this look, and all you need now is a slick of your favorite lipbalm. If you’ve time, to apply Nars’ Stormbird nail polish, you’ll be rockin’ and rollin’.

Peacock inspired, eyeshadow at Roberto Cavalli was mesmerizing.

STEP 1

Preparatory products like MAC’s Prep & Prime Natural Radiance and Nars’ Pro Prime Eyeshadow Base makes this a scinch.

STEP 2

Spray L‘Oreal Elnett Satin hairspray onto a clean, disposable mascara wand, and run through your eyebrow, then turn to Nars High Society eyeshadow palette for some serious color.

STEP 3

With a soft blending blush and a smaller brush for application, use the gorgeous colors in the palette as and where you want, ensuring to keep darker to the outside of the eye, and lighter colors to the inside. Use the smaller brush to pat color where you want, and the softer blending brush to move it to where you want. Bobbi Brown’s Metallic Gold is great for highlighting the inside corner of the eye, top and bottom.

STEP 4

Elizabeth Arden’s Gunmetal smokey grey eyeliner will bring this together so feel free to line top and bottom lashes, closely to the lashline, and along the inside of the lower lashline. Go to town with Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill Stretch Lengthening Mascara for added drama

STEP 5

Lancôme’s Blush Highlighter from the new Midnight Roses Collection and Tom Ford Private Blend Lipstick in Blush Nude will add the perfect hint of color to cheek and lips.

*Bonus Step*

Try a coat of Essie’s gorgeous deep green Stylenomics, and a matte top coat of Lancôme’s Limited Edition Givre Magique for an unusual twist.

For centuries, women have been sampling, testing, trying, smothering and slathering skincare products onto various body parts; it’s part of being a woman, and a feminine joy; not so much for the fellas.

Guys, having taken the plunge and deciding it’s ok to make the most of what God (and your folks) gave you and finding yourself at the skincare counter, I know all too well how baffling the next step can be; there are high tech lotions and potions enough to drown oneself in.

If it’s simplicity you seek, the functional and fuss-free Sisleÿum Global Revitalizer is perfect for the man about town.

Instead of creating a range of products, Sisley chose to create one product (with two formulations for differing skin types) that tackled several needs.

The Global Revitalizer –
1. Provides moisture and nutrition.
2. Repairs aggravated skin post-shaving.
3. Targets shine with a matifying effect.
4. Eenergises fatigued skin.
and, most importantly:
5.attacks early signs of aging.

1 sexy gunmetal stainless steel bottle, 5 results.

You’re thinking, how is this possible? What’s in this?

Moisture and nutrition is provided by Sunflower oil (rich in Oleic acid), Padina Pavonica creates a reservoir for the skin to stop moisture loss and Wild Pansy contains proteins that act as water channels to increase water circulation within the skin.
Razor burn relief comes from organically grown Swiss White Horehound Shea butter, and Allantoin helps treat and heal cuts and burns.

To aid in strengthening and recovering the skin’s vitality, the Revitalizer is packed with magnesium rich Olivina to “reactivate the cell’s energy metabolism”. Mineral compounds Malachite (for copper), Rhodocrosite (manganese) and Smithsonite (zinc) work together to create a shield against free radicals. Vitamin E and Dog Rose bring up the rear and re-enforce the anti-free radical barrier.
Firmness and wrinkle reduction come to you by way of Alkekengi Calyx, Padina Pavonica and White Willow; Vitamin A regulates cell turnover and Marjoram, Sage and Rosemary soothe and calm the skin.
It’s matifying.

As well as that long list of complicated sounding ingredients, there are two great smelling formulations; an oil-free, light gel/crème for normal or combination/oily skin great for the Summer, and a cream for normal/dry skin which is more hydrating for those who need it daily, or just in the Winter.

The bottle is elegant, the product simple to use, the results, satisfying; Sisley have successfully created a one-stop-shop for all your skincare needs, and it’s name is Sisleÿum Global Revitalizer.

Before you get excited and go thinking that I’m writing about some sexy girl-on-girl exploits…I’m not.

I’m writing about something else equally curvaceous and appealing to the senses – designer Diane von Furstenberg; a woman who knows women, is loved by women and celebrates being a woman.

There’s a good reason it’s impossible not to look fabulous in one of her signature wrap dresses…because Ms. Furstenberg understands what it means to be one of us complex, feminine creatures.

Girl/woman, soft/strong, feminine/masculine these are all tugs of war that perpetrate a woman’s being…usually on a daily basis.

So when I heard about the new fragrance Diane, I wondered which facet of the female Ms. Furstenberg had encapsulated; I’m delighted that it turned out to be a seductive one

Blow-drying; curling; setting; rolling; cutting; dying; tinting; straightening.

Most women do a combination of those things to their hair on a monthly, weekly, if not daily basis, and eventually the wear and tear of heat-treating and chemically processing hair take its toll; but it doesn’t have to.

For those out there (don’t worry your secret is safe with us) who frequently tangle with their tresses…help is at hand.

Since 2009 the globally renowned brand KeraStraight have been breaking ground with impressive protein treatments to smooth and repair hair, leaving it frizz free and beautifully conditioned, and you can now find a fantastic new addition KeraStraight’s protein-packed family… a Protein Mask…a very clever, scientific protein mask that uses nanotechnology to give you the hair you always dreamed of.

What is nanotechnology? Well basically, he word ‘nano’ means extremely small, on a microscopic level; so particles that are ‘nano’…are beyond teeny tiny in size, and most importantly, in weight.

Using Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein the KeraStraight mask harnesses tonnes of these little low-weight protein particles to form a fine net around each hair shaft, and rebuild the hair’s inner strength and structure…genius; all the power that protein provides and none of the muscle-weight to drag down your hair.

As if the Protein Mask wasn’t nerdy enough, it gets smarter! For the following 48 hrs after use, Smart Performance technology means the ingredients will continue to work within your hair, restructuring fibres to a fabulous finish, without you having to lift a finger.

This mask is perfect for chemically treated, undernourished and weak hair as it will revive lack-lustre locks to their former glory.

Feeding your hair the Kerastraight Protein Mask couldn’t be easier; slather it on to towel-dried hair and leave for 5-20 minutes (depending on the damage)…rinse and reveal gorgeously manageable, and noticeably less frizzy, stronger hair.

Getting your mane into shape, couldn’t be easier.

I have a confession to make; I can be a bit of a sceptic.

When it comes to products, makeup and skin…I’ve been through the mill and have been disappointed more than once to say the least.

For women I feel the concept of beauty is a delicate and emotional one; how we look matters, and how we get there has turned into the multi-billion dollar business that is the cosmetics world today.

So as a Beauty Writer, I luckily get to sample all kinds of new concoctions; but sometimes I get to rediscover products that may have lost the shiny newness of when they were first launched…but are still fantastic years later.

And so I find myself reviewing Bare Escentuals’ bareMinerals Foundation.

I’m all for natural, preservative free, fragrance free etc, however did I believe it really worked when it came to makeup? I wasn’t entirely convinced; so I was not expecting much from this powder foundation.

Firstly…powder…all over the face? Heavy, cakey, chalky I thought; what about blemishes and what about needing more or less coverage without looking overdone? This was my thought process as I faced the mirror, brush and powder in hand ready to buff away.

Inexpensive to buy and unassuming to look like…I was hesitant, but I diligently swirled and tapped my brush as instructed and began working the powder in circular motions from the outside of my face, towards the centre so as not to overload more delicate areas with product.

After a grand total of about 5 minutes buffing I stopped to take a look…and I couldn’t quite figure out what I saw.

Somehow…this powder had evened out my complexion, improved my skintone and most baffling of all…the powder allowed my skin to show through so it looked very natural.

For the first time in a while…I found myself bewildered by a great product; how could this be?

Without preservatives, talc, fillers, fragrance, waxes, oil or binders, this average looking powder is anything but! I found myself extremely impressed and comforted in the knowledge that what was on my face was better for my skin than many other foundations out there.

Naturally protected with SPF15 I felt confident in my glow and relieved at the effortless application.

Admittedly, if I had something I needed more coverage for, I personally might still opt for a touch of liquid concealer (as I’m not ready to let go of that just yet) and then use the bareMinerals over the top…but there is also a bareMinerals concealer available.

Available in a wide range of cool and warm shades, the original formula for normal skin, and bareMinerals Matte SPF15 Foundation has you covered whatever the weather.

I am happy to admit that I wronged judged this foundation before trying it, as I have been thoroughly impressed and find that I’ve turned to this every morning as part of my routine.

It’s all too easy to be dazzled by exotic ingredients from far flung corners of the world; by fancy packaging and astonishing prices; but it’s not always the mark of a truly good product as we all know, but sometimes forget.

Makeup should be easy, accessible and it should work…and bareMinerals does all of that.

Bare Escentuals have proven to be a brand to believe in and I’m looking forward to working my way through the range without breaking the bank!

So…my workout this Winter? Buff, buff, buff.

Over the last few years, the men’s cosmetic industry has exploded! With skincare coming to the forefront of importance in a man’s daily regime, there is now enough out there to give us girls a run for our money in terms of luxury and quality! With an increase in options, has come an increase in awareness with the new breed of man, and the discerning male customer may find himself in a haze of confusion, trying to find the right product amongst all that’s now being offered.

So where does skincare start for a gent? Well from an outsider’s perspective, you could have all the best creams in the world waiting to be applied…but before that…there comes the dreaded morning shave. Having to scrape one’s face with a razor could not be a comfortable experience I imagine and shaving can leave skin red, raw and furious!

On asking some fellas who do shave daily what that means for their skin, and what could make it a better experience for them, the majority said the same thing. Firstly you have to get off on the right foot with the right shaving gel/crème/oil. Alright, so let’s start from the beginning.

The Dior Homme Dermo System enveloped in elegant black, white, glass and steel bottles is modern, minimalist and not to be underestimated. With a limited number of products for each stage of the self-care routine, it is uncomplicated and packed with all the latest technology that ensures the highest quality of results.

The Protective Shaving Crème has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients which makes what is commonly an abrasive experience into an effortlessly smooth one.

In an unfussy tube, the crème is packed with Bioecolia, an ingredient derived from a natural sugar complex. Bioecolia is fantastic for strengthening and protecting the pH balance of skin as it inhibits the growth of unfriendly bacteria.

The abrasiveness of shaving leaves the skin wide open to all kinds of nasties to irritate and infect and the Protective Shaving Crème shields the skin whilst leaving it well conditioned, re-balanced and supple.

So for those of you who have to face yourself, bleary eyed in the mirror every morning for your daily ablutions, the Protecting Shaving Crème goes a long way towards a smooth start to the day.

With the eyes being the windows to the soul and all that…I think it’s safe to say that mascara would be within the top 5 of most women’s desert-island must-haves. However, finding just the right mascara can seem like a never-ending journey of goopy formulas, funny brushes, panda eyes and clumpy lashes.

Having not been blessed with thick lustrous lashes myself, mascara is one of my many best friends. I want it all; plumping, lengthening, conditioning and long-lasting! Willing to try yet another newly developed, supposedly miraculous mascara, I found myself staring at a shiny new tube of Sisley’s newly launched Phyto-Mascara Ultra-Stretch

This first thing I noticed about this product was that the brush is surprisingly understated…no combs, separating spikes or oversized nonsense here, and I’m a firm believer in the brush being just as important as the formula when it comes to mascara, so Sisley was off to a good start. Each extraction of the wand from the tube yielded the perfect amount of product on the brush and with not a clump in sight on this one I was hopeful. A gentle dip in the middle of the brush meant it followed the curve of my eyelashes perfectly and a blend of fibres made the brush hold and deliver colour evenly.

One coat immediately brought my lashes to life with a subtle, deep, definition. However as every mascara-wearing woman knows…it’s not just about the initial effect, but how mascara wears throughout the day that makes one better or worse than another. With many mascaras causing brittleness and resulting in a shocking number of eyelashes appearing on the cotton pad at the end of the day, the Rice Phytocermaides, Pro-Vitamin B-5 and Castor Oil in this formula strengthen and nourish eyelashes and prevent them from breakage.

A second coat built beautifully and I suspect the Wheat Proteins are the reason my eyelashes seemed longer than before. With the last ingredient of Sisley’s new product being a duo of polymers to curl and set colour into the lashes, I was ready for my third and final, volume-busting coat (I was really going for it).

Still with not a clump in sight and high-impact, full-volume lashes at the ready I was eager to see what state I would be in at the end of the day.

A midday glance in the mirror reaffirmed that my eyes were still framed with fluttery lashes and intense colour. Ok…so far so good. With the pollen count being sky-high and hayfever causing major eye irritation, I was glad this mascara didn’t flake one bit and stayed just where I’d put it…many tend to have minds of their own and wander about I find.

The evening brought on cocktails with my girls, for which I of course wanted to look as fresh as I did in the morning for. A thorough inspection in the Ladies’ resulted in nothing but a bit of primping with my hair and an application of lip gloss; my mascara was just as I’d left it in the morning. There was not a flake in sight, not a black smudge anywhere…brilliant! Had it glued itself to my eyelashes I wondered…would it be a nightmare to take off perhaps? The answer was no…and no. All my eyelashes thankfully remained attached to my person when removing my makeup, and my lashes were left soft and slightly glossier than normal…not a bad thing at all!

So have Sisley created the perfect mascara? Very possibly! With hundreds out there to try, I highly recommend that Phyto-Mascara Ultra-Stretch gets bumped up to the top of the list.

Modern technology aside, it could be said that paper has been one of the most essential communication tools created in the history of the world.

The journey of paper through history is as intricate as the strands first seen in Papyrus in Ancient Egypt; however it wasn’t for another 3000 years that paper as we know it today was created.

The people of the Han Dynasty in China circa 105AD were responsible for refining the art of making paper, thereby giving us the material so readily available to us now.

Back in 105AD however…what was to be done with this wondrous new creation? Write on it, paint on it… fold it and cut it perhaps? For the noble palace dwellers of the time, paper was a luxury and this is where the incredible art of Jian Zhi (Chinese Paper Cutting) began.

Fast forward several centuries to 2009, and Chunwei Liao thought to revive this ancient art by establishing the innovative and award winning company Paperself. Inspired by Jian Zhi, Paperself quickly found its niche in the design world and won the Best Product Award in 2010.

Surprising the design crowd with new and unusual ways paper can be used, Paperself also surprised the Beauty industry with a collection of breathtakingly delicate eyelashes; each of the six designs come in two sizes and have a symbolic meaning in Chinese culture.

Light as a feather and fragile as leaves of the trees paper is made from, these quirky, ethereal eyelashes pack a mighty unusual punch and are perfect for the discerning wearer who is ready to work a look that will have heads turning.

Of all the incarnations paper has taken since 105AD, eyelashes is the newest yet and thanks to Paperself pioneering the way, a new dimension to beautifying the being is readily available at such outlets as Harvey Nichols, the V&A Museum, Browns and the Barbican.

For a fluttering of history, these beautiful creations are paperfection.

On What? Magazine’s cover photo shoot, I had a chat with the renowned Acupuncturist Mairé Weaver, who gave me some insights into her journey, her practice, and the art of 5 Element Acupuncture and Facial Revitalising Treatment.

KK – What does Facial Revitalising Treatment mean?

MW- This is a holistic treatment to treat the whole person on every level. Instead of having Botox to freeze the muscles or Restylane or surgery, acupuncture can help to restore and bring energy to the facial muscles. Acupuncture treats from within; it treats the body, mind and spirit as well as the external, which brings balance. I believe that when we are feeling balanced it really shows, so you can be out at a party in your Lanvin dress and you feel beautiful from within and if someone is happy you can see it in their eyes.

KK – What made you get involved with 5 Element Acupuncture?

MW – 14 years ago I went for treatment out of curiosity, and I was so amazed at how powerful it was and how good I felt afterwards, I decided to train myself. It was a three year course and it completely changed my life; I just knew it was the right thing for me. I am privileged that I get to meet amazing people from many different walks of life and I see fantastic transformations…it’s very rewarding. For instance I work with infertility and there is nothing better than helping couples create a beautiful baby.

KK - Regarding the race against time, would you agree that perhaps women have it harder than men?

MW – Now there are so many men going down the same route as women with regard to this. I think it’s a little sad that everyone is chasing youth. In Chinese culture and medicine, older women, late 40-50s, are revered and treated with respect because it is thought that they have more life experience and wisdom. Somehow now it seems to have gone the other way! You only have to look at the popular magazines or switch on the TV to see all these frozen faces.

KK – What would you say to women struggling with that battle?

MW – I would say look after yourself, nurture your soul, and laugh as much as you can. I think laughter lines can be very attractive, much better than having a smooth face and being boring.

KK – From a holistic standpoint, what do you think of the fashion industry?

MW - This is a particularly difficult industry, it is not for the faint hearted. It’s fabulous and very fast moving and of course it’s fantasy. It’s so wonderful to be part of it, the glamour etc, but I think you would have to be a strong character to stay grounded and have a sense of humour; there are an awful lot of egos out there!

KK - How can a busy city girl reconnect?

MW – Nature…connecting with nature is grounding. A walk in the park can be a very

good start. It’s also very important to stay in the present, don’t put happiness off until you meet the right man or have the right job etc…live for today! We are so busy rushing around; sometimes we miss great chunks of our lives. If you can do something for yourself, maybe meditation or acupuncture treatment it can really be life changing. When we are balanced it shows in your eyes and that really is beautiful.
